Do SIPs block sound transmission (STC)?
Sound control is especially important in lodging structures, multi-family apartments, condominium complexes, Senior Living Facilities or any building that includes dwelling units with shared walls.
The sound resistance of a SIP wall depends on the thickness of the gypsum drywall applied, the exterior finish applied, and the thickness of the insulating foam core that is used. SIPs, with their solid core insulation and dual faced panels, are especially effective at blocking high-frequency noise, and most homeowners notice the quiet comfort of a SIP home, particularly in high wind areas.
For residential, multifamily and commercial buildings, a universal sound transmission coefficient (STC) is used to specify the sound resistance of wall assemblies. Sound Control in Building Design plays a critical role to productivity and well being. In multifamily structures where dwelling units share attached walls, Building Codes require a measure of sound privacy between units. The International Building Code (IBC) specifies a minimum architectural design standard of privacy of 50 STC (Sound Transmission Class) between units, which can require multiple products, installation steps and associated costs.
Premier SIPS deliver assembly options for high STC ratings, hourly fire-ratings and energy code compliance in one turn-key product system.
Testing by an independent laboratory confirms that Premier SIPS (Structural Insulated Panel Systems) reduce sound transmission, for a quieter indoor environment. Certain wall assemblies using Premier SIPS achieve sound transmission class ratings (STC) of up to 58 an 88d 59 - well above the STC 50 requirement for walls separating dwelling units. Notably, these assemblies are also ASTM E119 hourly fire-rated assemblies.
Assemblies with a range of STC ratings are available, including options with an STC rating greater than 59 for party walls in multifamily buildings.
